The Japanese government seeks to finish decommissioning Fukushima plant, belonging to Tokyo Electric Power, with the help of experts and technology from the world’s top nuclear powers the United States and France.
Washington will help Tokyo develop equipment and technology to manage and dispose of radioactive waste produced from the decommissioning work, while Paris will assist with the development of remote-control technology that can withstand high-radiation environments.
As of Friday, March 11, exactly five years since a magnitude-9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused the world’s worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986, only 10 percent of the plant had been decommissioned. EFE
